Water pressure emergencies
Warning signs of a failing pressure regulator include high or low pressure, surging water, banging or vibrating pipes, leaking toilet fill valves, leaking hot water relief valves, and broken pipes or leaking faucets.
Recommended home pressure is about 55 PSI, and most codes cap safe pressure at 80 PSI — manufacturers and some home warranty providers may void coverage above that. Older homes are more likely to have pressure issues because municipal pressure has risen and older buildings lack regulators. A failed regulator usually needs replacement, which is a technical job rather than a simple hardware-store repair. Learn more on our water pressure repair page.
Galvanic corrosion (electrolysis)
Galvanic corrosion occurs when dissimilar metals are connected in the presence of an electrolyte. Salt water and acidic solutions are strong electrolytes; fresh potable water is weak, and distilled water is extremely weak. It is uncommon in fresh water, and other kinds of corrosion are often misnamed as electrolysis. In a galvanic pairing, the less noble (anodic) metal corrodes while the more noble (cathodic) metal is protected.
